Andrea Hermenau Quartet/Quintet

Andrea Hermenau has arranged and composed pieces for her band that emphasize the poetic side of the night – that time of storytelling when the imagination becomes particularly colourful and opens up spaces for ambiguous experiences of the world.

The modern band sound of this outstanding quintet interweaves minimal music textures with south-eastern European rhythms and melancholic, expressive sounds. Hermenau’s compositions are inspired by poems, myths and sevdalinka, traditional Bosnian songs.

Her lyrical singing is able to both enhance and contrast the facets of the nocturnal darkness in a poignant way, in some pieces also in unison with saxophone or piano.

The finely tuned interplay with her fantastic fellow musicians makes the music feel inspired. Andrea Hermenau and her quintet were nominated for the BMW Welt Jazz Award in 2020.
